Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, and Why Your Kids Need to Know Classical Culture | The Getty IrisWhat's with the ads? A friend of mine, whose kids are 9 and 11, recommended Percy Jackson and the Olympians to us. She knows my kids quite well and knows their interests. I was reading about the books on Amazon and they look right up my kids' alley. They have heard and loved the first two Harry Potters and are begging me to read them 3, but I think it's a little too dark for them yet they are only 6 and 7. I saw on Amazon that Percy Jackson is recommended for 5th-9th grades, ages , etc. I frequently read them books for kids ages , but I was just wondering whether this series would be ok for my kids or whether it would be too intense for them.
The Lightning Thief
About a year ago, the novelist Neil Gaiman delivered a lecture at the Barbican, in London, on behalf of the Reading Agency, a not-for-profit organization that promotes literacy and reading for pleasure among children and adults. They can find the stories they need to, and they bring themselves to stories. There he learns the skills becoming of his lineage—sword fighting looms large—and discovers his own peculiar gifts: even when injured, he is miraculously healed and empowered by water. Riordan has come up with a clever conceit, which is amusingly sustained. Medusa is the proprietress of a garden center in New Jersey that sells lifelike statuary: no prizes for guessing how the stock is replenished. Ares, the god of war, is a biker in a red muscle shirt who comes armed with a huge knife. A detour to Las Vegas finds Percy and his pals beguiled by the attractions of a casino: video games, laser tag, indoor skiing.

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself. Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.
Erin Branham October 17, 6 min read. A family visiting the Getty Villa explores ancient art, history, and mythology through frescoes from the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum. Teaching kids about the world of ancient Greece and Rome presents a few problems for parents. The history and mythology of the classical world can be strong stuff for kids. As education specialist for family programs at the Villa, I encounter 8-, 7-, even 6-year-olds who are completely captivated by the heroes, gods, and monsters that populate the tales of classical myth and history. The adventure and derring-do of these stories is an easy sell to kids, and parents too for that matter. But I believe your kids need to know more than that.
