King Louie | Wickedpedia | FANDOM powered by WikiaHe sings the song "I Wanna Be Like You" after he kidnaps Mowgli and asks the boy to show him the secret of "man's red flower" the animal term for fire , so he and his followers can be like men. Unlike most characters in the film, Louie was created solely by the Walt Disney Company, and there was no ape king in the original novel by Rudyard Kipling, on which the film was based. The original story for Louie started out quite differently, but he was eventually given the voice and personality of the late and famed jazz trumpeter and vocalist Louis Prima. Around , Louis Prima's widow sued the Walt Disney Company over the unauthorized use of her late husband's voice and public personal in past Jungle Book spin-off projects, as Jim Cummings 's imitations of Prima featured in them were near perfect. However, by , these files were apparently lifted, allowing Disney to once again have full use of the character, as evidenced by 's debut of the live show Wishes , aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship, marking Louie's first speaking role with newly recorded dialogue since the video game The Jungle Book Groove Party.

Unlike the majority of the adapted characters in the film, Louie was not featured in Rudyard Kipling 's original works. King Louie was portrayed as an orangutan who was the leader of the other jungle primates, and who attempted to gain knowledge of fire from Mowgli , in order to become more human. King Louie was voiced by Louis Prima in the original film. Initially, the filmmakers considered Louis Armstrong for the role, but to avoid the likely controversy that would result from casting a black person to voice an ape, they instead chose Prima, a white singer. Although the Disney adaptation is based on the Kipling stories, the character King Louie does not appear in Rudyard Kipling 's original book , as orangutans , the species as which he is portrayed, are not native to India in real life.
Favreau, Marks, and producer Brigham Taylor developed the film's story as a balance between Disney's animated adaptation and Kipling's original works, borrowing elements from both into the film. Principal photography commenced in , with filming taking place entirely in Los Angeles. The film required extensive use of computer-generated imagery to portray the animals and settings. The film received praise for its visual effects, vocal performances, direction, musical score, and its faithfulness to the original animated film. Mowgli is a "man-cub" raised by the wolf Raksha and her pack, led by Akela , in an Indian jungle ever since he was brought to them as an infant by the black panther Bagheera. Bagheera trains Mowgli to learn the ways of the wolves, but the boy faces certain challenges and falls behind his wolf siblings, while Akela objects to him using human "tricks", like building tools, instead of learning the ways of the pack.
