This course is designed to introduce students to a thorough, research-oriented view of Physical Chemistry. Further topics include atomic structure, valence-bond and molecular orbital theories of chemical bonding and group theory. The concepts of quantum theory are applied to molecular spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. To understand the modern theory of matter, conceptual hurdles of both psychological and mathematical variety must be overcome. Summary: We will be discussing the ideas and postulates of quantum theory, which forms the underlying basis for all phenomena in the realm of chemistry. This theoretical framework will lead us to understand deeply some very basic concepts in chemistry. The actual quantitative description of chemical or spectroscopic processes is very complicated of course, and one would have to resort to approximations and computational techniques to obtain reliable results. In this course we will focus on model problems that can be solved with 'relatively little' effort and which illustrate the nature of the quantum world and will introduce you to thinking 'quantum'.
