Winners of literary lottery that is Richard & Judy's book club | The IndependentThe annual Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate happened last weekend and, as always, it was an amazing weekend of crime fiction, bookish antics, parties, and awards. It was a time to rub shoulders with like-minded types who write and read crime fiction, and to catch up with friends and meet new ones. After introductions from the festival organisers and sponsors, each of the six shortlisted authors was presented with a silver tankard and invited to speak about their novel. Clare was presented with the award by Simon Theakston and broadcaster Mark Lawson. I would like to thank my publishers and agent for supporting me, everybody who has read and recommended I Let You Go, and the crime writing community for their endless encouragement. She has represented this genre quite brilliantly all over the world, both in person and through her novels, which have earned her legions of fans and a place among the very greatest crime writers of all time. She is the Queen of Crime, and long may she reign over us.

Last night, the Channel 4 teatime presenters announced their first children's book club - and booksellers predict a similar surge in interest. Leading bookshops and online retailers have quadrupled orders for the eight books, aimed at five to year-olds. A spokesman for Waterstones said: 'Richard and Judy is probably the most single influential thing in getting people to read new things. A spokesman for online retailer Amazon said: 'Quite simply, people trust Richard and Judy's recommendations and as they continue to put forward books of a high calibre, that will only go from strength to strength. The adult version of the book club has been so successful that last year 26 per cent of all books sold had been featured on Richard And Judy.
The Richard and Judy Book Club has shifted an incredible four million titles since it was launched in partnership with WHSmith 18 months ago. I was a young reporter for Yorkshire Television but, occupied as I was, something was missing. I felt oddly dissatisfied. For example, Operation Mincemeat is a book about an elaborate true-life Second World War intelligence scam — British spies hoodwinking the Nazis into believing the Allies are about to invade Greece in reality, Sicily. That kind of story is right up my street but the chances of Judy picking it off a shelf would be about zero. However, Operation Mincemeat was up for consideration for the club, so Judy had to read it.
